## Top 10 Fastest Double Bass Drummers in Metal History

The speed demons of double bass drumming. In metal, speed equals status — and these drummers have pushed the boundaries of human capability with their feet. From documented 280+ BPM records to inhuman endurance, these are the fastest double bass players in heavy metal history.

### Background

Double bass drumming is the heartbeat of extreme metal. What started as a jazz innovation by Louie Bellson in the 1940s became the defining characteristic of heavy metal's most intense subgenres. In thrash, death, and black metal, speed is currency — and these ten drummers are the wealthiest.

The technique evolved through distinct eras: Cozy Powell and Carmine Appice brought double bass to hard rock in the 70s. Then came the 80s thrash revolution — Dave Lombardo and Lars Ulrich proved double bass could be both fast AND musical. The 90s death metal explosion pushed speeds past 200 BPM with Pete Sandoval and Gene Hoglan leading the charge.

Today, drummers like George Kollias have documented speeds exceeding 280 BPM with sustained precision. Modern techniques like heel-toe, swivel, and slide have made previously impossible speeds achievable. But raw speed alone isn't enough — the greatest double bass drummers combine velocity with endurance, groove, and musicality.

This ranking considers documented BPM records, sustained speed over full performances, technique innovation, and influence on the genre. These are the fastest feet in metal history.
